Created in September 1889 from existing Minnesota railroads, the Great Northern Railway eventually stretched west through North Dakota, Montana, and Northern Idaho to Washington State.  James Jerome Hill, the "Empire Builder", constructed this line.  It was one of four roads merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad on March 2, 1970.
