Lynn M. Stone: From Cows to Continents - A Journey in Animal Photography

Lynn Stone has been fond of animals ever since he can remember.  As an eight-year-old he had a simple Kodak camera and first used it to photograph dairy cows.  The early cow pasture days were unknowingly the launchpad for a career in photographing and writing about animals.  Eventually he visited 49 states (apologies, Louisiana), over two dozen countries, and the seven continents.  At the conclusion of trips, he returned home to the Fox River Valley west of Chicago until moving back to his native state of Connecticut more than ten years ago.

What became a full-time career as an outdoor writer and photographer was an incremental process.  Lynn had a lengthy career as a public school teacher and was a part-time sports and feature writer for a daily newspaper.  Late in his tenure as an educator he began writing non-fiction children's books.  Always the naturalist, he wrote largely about nature but also delved into geography, U.S. history, sports, and the armed services.

Lynn first dabbled in professional outdoor photographer in his late twenties.  In subsequent years his outdoor photography was published in greeting cards, books, calendars, posters, and magazines, including, among others, National Geographic, Audubon, Natural History, Readers' Digest, Ranger Rick, National Wildlife, and Yankee.  His first love remains wildlife photography, but he adapted years ago to a broader view of the animal kingdom and added domestic animals to his repertoire.  Even the Holsteins that filled a boy's camera viewfinder become subjects of interest again, taking their place along Giant Pandas, King Penguins, African Lions, Koalas, Grizzlies, 40 dog breeds, and countless other creatures, large and small.

He remains a student of animal life and photography.  Fortunately, his wife (see Grapski, Kimberly) helps him with the latter.
